Clayton and I headed north toward Jasper to try Nigel Pass Peak. This objective had caught my eye many years ago while hiking the Upper Brazeau Canyon.
We hiked the approach trail in short order, then left the trail and started directly toward the peak. We were calling out to alert bears of our presence and sure enough, over the next rise, I saw a mother grizzly running away quickly. She scrambled up a right-to-left ascending 45 degree crack in a cliff. Then I saw her cub fly up the same crack just as easily! All this happened in a few seconds, and I only got a photo of the cub. What impressive skills these bears have to move about this terrain!
The rest of the day was great and the summit was wonderful, but the mother and baby bear really stole the show.
