On Day #4, I switched things up a bit and decided to go on a longer hike with less elevation gain. Jacques Lake would fit the bill perfectly. This 25 km hike felt less like a goal and a bit more like a journey. After several days of going up and down mountains, this low elevation hike through lush forest was a nice change.
Few other hikers were on this trail, and regular evidence of fresh bear signs had me yelling out "YO BEAR" frequently.
After passing the Summit Lakes, the trail feels especially remote, although travel along it remained easy and straightforward.
On the return hike, I saw a cow moose and her offspring at the second Summit Lake. The cow would hold her breath for upwards of 30 seconds while she ate reeds below the waters surface. I could see the bubbles rise around her face, and hear as the water dripped off her fur when she lifted her head. I watched this for 15 minutes before quietly continuing on.
Later, a chilly bird-bath in the Maligne River refreshed me for the drive back to camp.
