Cory Pass is one of my favorite hikes - this was my sixth time to the pass in eight years. It's a loop hike with a steep climb for the first couple of hours to the pass, then a rocky descent into Gargoyle Valley, followed by a long forested walk back to the trailhead.
I started out under cloudy skies. As I gained elevation into the fog, snow flurries appeared and Cory Pass itself was snowy. I made it to this point in just under two hours, and was feeling quite good about myself. I wrote a quick birthday message to my sister, and continued over the pass. The footprints left by hikers in the days past ceased here.
I continued carefully down into Gargoyle Valley, where about a foot of snow was clinging to the steep slopes. The dense fog and snowfall made for a very spooky feeling hike - a day late for Halloween!
I had lunch under the invisible (fog) Mt. Louis, and descended through Edith Pass. I was back at the trailhead four and a half hours after setting out...whew!
