Survey Peak has a savage approach. Two-plus hours of trail-less, mosquito-ridden bushwacking. It's funny - when I see online trip reports I often dismiss them - 'it can't be that bad' I say. When Clayton and I left the trail, the bushwacking and mosquitos weren't that bad and after half an hour I was like "this isn't so bad". Then, as you continue on and you rustle by more bushes, the bugs are insane. The cuts and scratches start to add up. Because the line of sight is so short, the shrub seems never-ending. Still, I knew Survey Peak was an easy scramble within reach from the highway, so no regrets or complaints here.
Once above treeline, the bugs were oddly stuck to us and didn't dissipate until high on the rocks.
The next couple of hours were pure bliss - easy scrambling with views of glaciated peaks all around.
Sometimes at the summit, you just have to enjoy the surroundings without overthinking the descent - besides, those darned mosquitos aren't thinking about us!
