This was THE day to visit the mountains in search of fall colour!
I hadn't been to Healy Pass before, despite its popularity. There was a high pressure system which had been providing sun for days. This day, there wasn't a cloud in the sky, ensuring a nice blue hue to contrast with the fall yellows.
We hiked a gradual ascent through forest before reaching Healy Pass. From there, we included an extension along the Monarch Ramparts - a ridge extending for 4 km from the north face of The Monarch.
The ridge provided fine views in all directions - west to the Verdant Creek drainage in B.C., north to giants like Mt. Ball and Storm Mountain along the continental divide, east to Mt. Bourgeau and Sunshine Meadows, and south to The Monarch, Simpson Ridge and Mt. Assiniboine.
I personally think that Haiduk Peak should be spelled Hudak Peak, but that's just me.
From the ridge, we dropped down to Eohippus Lake and hiked through more larch forest back to Simpson Pass, completing a very scenic loop before descending Healy Creek Trail back to the vehicle.
