Maze Peak was a wonderfully scenic hike and scramble in the Ya Ha Tinda region of Alberta. I hadn't been to this area before. It is definitely more ranchy-horsey cowboy territory than hikey-hikey territory. The long drive took us through Sundre, before following a series of township and gravel roads to the obscure trailhead. It was clear soon after starting out that this trail-less approach would be ours alone today. Good conversation and fine weather helped us along as we ascended the ridge. Interesting rock formations added to the intrigue.
Some hands-on scrambling across slabs and steps broke up what would otherwise be a monotonous ascent. A fine view greeted us at the top.
On descent, we extended our day by traversing to the western outlier of Maze Peak. David was joined by his first ever tick here...aww, he's growing up so fast before my eyes.
On the long drive home we passed many open meadows, several with new foles alongside their grazing parents. To cap off the day, we stopped into Half Hitch Brewing Company in Cochrane for a pint...very refreshing!
