A cloudy day greeted us at the trailhead of Junction Hill. We worked our way up the ridge. Through broken views between the trees, we could see bigger summits off to the west.
Clayton was lamenting that this was the first time he didn't see his pet grouse on this hike - the one that always appeared on previous visits here. But alas, the grouse did eventually show up, very near to where it had in the past. After a few moments of bonding time, we continued up to the summit for some lunch.
The descent offered some great variation of terrain from foggy forest to emerald meadows and rocky outcrops. The picture following the calypso orchid photo is somewhat dark in theme, but a part of nature nonetheless - be warned those of you with a low tolerance to "creepy" things. Im not sure what species of arthropod these black, hook-footed little guys are, but they were wriggling away as they ate the last morsels from a deer skull that seems to have the shocked look you may expect when death is at your door. The smell was repugnant.
