I snuck in a scramble of Boundary Peak in Kananaskis Country before work today. The weather was a mix of sun and cloud, but even when it turned rather dark, the clouds had more bark than bite - it stayed dry all day.
I started from the Lusk Pass trailhead along the Powderface Trail (gravel road), after driving through Sibbald and Highway 68.
I really liked this approach to the mountain. A series of small trails over less-traveled terrain meant map-reading and route-finding were key through the forest. A hunters camp along the way will indicate that you are on the correct route. It was a very quiet day (Tuesday), and I never saw another person all day. I did however see two small birds of prey quite close to me that I later identified as merlins (about the size of a pigeon).
After ascending to a verdant pass known as South Lusk Meadows, I could see Boundary Peak off to the west.
A relatively brief scramble took me to the ridgecrest, where I first ascended an outlier to the northwest (Boundary Ridge). I had a fine view of the peak from here. The wind was churning (although not as badly as I've seen before in this area), and after donning my coat and toque, I hiked along the ridge to the summit.
Most folks take other approaches to this mountain, judging by the entries in the summit register. I, however, highly recommend this serene trail from Lusk Pass trailhead.
Having some extra time, I looped the drive by going south on Powderface Trail to Highway 22X - the scenic route.
