Peter Jakobs and I stole away from work on a Tuesday to bike to Junction Fire Lookout.
We started by fording the Sheep River. Soon after, Peter J. got a flat, but we soon had that fixed and we were on our way. Upon reaching Dyson Falls, Pete decided to head back, while I headed up Junction Mountain Trail for the lookout.
A dusting of snow from the night before was more evident as I climbed. The trail became looser and more rugged the closer I got to the fire lookout. I was expecting that someone may still be posted up there, but upon reaching the top, found nothing but solitude (I guess the fire risk is almost nil by now). I ate a cheese and pickle sandwich in the cold, calm air and started down after 15 minutes of snacking and summit photos.
The ride down was a riot - my hands were sore the next day from gripping the handlebar so tightly on the fast descent! I love hiking the most, but a good mountain bike ride sure adds excitement to the season.
