It's hard to know whether or not to recommend Blackrock Mountain to friends. The vehicle approach travels 16 km along a VERY bumpy TransAlta service road that takes almost an hour to navigate. Then there are vehicle crossings of the Ghost River, if you have a 4X4. If not, it simply adds 3 km to the hike each way. Once you park though, the enjoyment starts.
The trail is very well maintained for this wilderness area, and once you ascend through the forest, the landscape is an interesting mix of rock pinnacles, deep fissures and scenic plateaus.
The trail was used by pack horses long ago (the fire lookout was in service from 1929 to 1959), and even though sections are cliffy and narrow, it is a hike the whole way.
For the effort required (on foot anyway), Blackrock Mountain is definitely a good choice.
