The hike to Bow Hut exceeded my expectations. I started by hiking to Bow Glacier Falls - the start of the Bow River. I had lunch under the thundering falls, and this late in the year, I had the area all to myself. After, I returned to the main trail in order to hike to Bow Hut, a base shelter perched on a rocky plateau at 2350 m.
In proceeding to the hut, one must climb over a limestone rock that bridges a gorge. The holds are good and the top is broad, so it's quite fun. I continued south, deep into the rocky basin, where I found a route up a wide gully to the plateau. The hut had a large group leaving that morning. Past the hut, I hiked up to the toe of the Wapta Icefield, and had nice a nice view of St. Nicholas peak from there. My second lunch was on a high point above Bow Hut, with stunning views down the valley toward Iceberg Lake.
On the return, a snow squall blew in - a strong reminder of the weather in the weeks to come. The wind was at my back, however, and I quite enjoyed the four-season weather in one day.
