We were initially headed for Cobalt Lake in the Bugaboos today, but after realizing I had a low tire on my vehicle, we returned to Radium to deal with it rather then chance driving the 50km gravel access to the Bugaboos. With a later start time, we downsized our drive (and hike) by going to Dog Lake instead.
The weather was hot and sunny today, in contrast to two days prior.
Dog Lake is nestled in a lovely area of Kootenay National Park. The trail starts by heading across two bridges (one of them suspension) spanning the Kootenay River. We soon reached the tranquil Dog Lake. We hiked along a small spur trail to the shore of the lake, and saw a wood frog here.
We extended the hike to loop in with the East Kootenay Trail, finishing the 7km with a walk along an old overgrown fireroad. This portion of trail was relatively viewless, but two gray jays led us for hundreds of metres - swooping from branch to branch down the length of the trail, hoping their cuteness would get them some snacks, I'm sure.
