Clayton and I attempted to reach Taiga Viewpoint via Frozen Lake today.
This area lies along the Continental Divide (B.C. - Alberta border), and as such, has more snow than other areas of the mountains. After reaching Elk Pass, we ascended toward Frozen Lake along the interprovincial boundary (a simple cutline through the forest).
After a quick snack at Frozen Lake, things got interesting. We tried the hikers approach to Taiga Viewpoint, but steep snow slopes prevented us from continuing. We backtracked and tried to ascend a parallel ridge instead. This worked for a little while, but soon dumped us at a plateau where the ridge cliffed out. Clayton ascended a bit higher to survey the situation, but reported to me that there were several steep gullies to cross, all of which were snow covered and had runouts directly down to the lake which was covered in a thin layer of ice. The reward did not warrant the risk here, and we decided to return some day in a future autumn to photograph the golden needles of the many larch trees in this area.
