The Northover Traverse is a big undertaking for one day. People often backpack this route in two or sometimes three days. It is 36 km long and involves 2100 m of elevation gain.
I had done this hike solo back in 2009, but it was on Clayton' front-burner checklist, so I was happy to take in this hugely scenic trek again.
You need a good forecast for this hike - it took us 13 hours with two lunch breaks.
Both times I have been up on the ridge, it was sunny and nice, but very windy. I think when the sun is shining on Northover Ridge, it's probably windy. The wind was warm though, and not long after we descended from the ridgecrest, I was back in short sleeves.
The last major section of the day - the 10 km 'trudge' out from Three Isle Lake, isn't as bad as people make it seem. It has it's scenic parts, and the well-used trail is in good shape and allows for quick travel (if you have it left in you at this point) back to the vehicle if daylight is waning.
