Peter, Tara and Myself headed out for a three day backpack from Sunshine Ski Area on Highway 1 to Hawk Creek Trailhead on Highway 93.
We set up a shuttle vehicle, so that a one-way hike was possible.
On day 1, we hiked over Healy Pass and descended to Egypt Lake Campground. After setting up camp, we explored the Pharaoh Lake and Black Rock Lake area, before returning for supper.
On day 2, we had the luxury of leaving our tents where they were and exploring the many scenic attractions with light packs, since we were staying at that location for two nights. After visiting the triplicate of Egypt, Scarab and Mummy Lakes (a very Egyptian theme in this area), I extended the day with a jaunt up Pharaoh Peak for a better view of the surroundings. A brief thunderstorm at the summit ushered me on my way, and I met back up with Peter and Tara for supper. That evening, something caught our eye in Pharaoh Creek. Was it a dead branch? Nope, it was a rather large (for this stream) dead fish. We decided that it needed to be poked. I lifted it out of the water on a stick, but then I was penalized for my actions. The stink was shocking. More than just a dead animal smell, this was pungent beyond belief. The moral - leave dead fish alone.
On day 3, we hiked out over Whistling Pass, along the shores of Haiduk Lake and over Ball Pass before the long descent along Hawk Creek to Highway 93. After we enjoyed a refreshing birdbath in the river to wash up, we drove a short distance to Marble Canyon Campground. There, we celebrated our accomplishment with a few beer and grilled goodies.
