On the drive to the trailhead today, I noticed a great grey owl on a fencepost. I hit the brakes and turned around. This owl was a little more tolerant of my presence than others I have come across. I watched for about 10 minutes as the owl hunted from the fence. It would listen, look, and dive down to catch mice or voles - I even saw it catch one. Then it would swoop down a few more fenceposts and repeat the procedure - a special start to my day.
Upon reaching the trailhead, I set off on my bike for the long, steep approach to Mt. Barwell. The wind gusts were nice as this climb was a sweaty affair.
After stashing my bike in the woods and changing into hiking gear, I proceeded through pine forest to the summit of Mt. Barwell. An interesting little escarpment made a nice lunch spot where I took down two bean wraps and some ethnic snacks from Kathi.
Once back at my bike, I changed again and rode like the wind down the steep service road - woo-hoo!
