Day three found us going to Sunset Pass and Pinto Lake. We took a short but worthwhile detour to Sunset Lookout, after about 3 km of ascending the trail through forested switchbacks. The lookout provides an interesting view of the Alexandra River valley, which is not often seen. Views of Mt. Coleman along the trail to Sunset Pass were enjoyed. Pinto Lake has several terraces overlooking it that provide a nice spot for lunch. On the return, Peter saw a grizzly about 50 m off to the side, feeding on berries. It took off before I could see it, but not before rearing up on its hind legs to check Peter out. Then, as soon as his front paws went down, he was gone.
