I started out from the Smith-Dorrien Highway on snowshoes, but the popularity of Gypsum Ridge soon became evident when a packed trail in the snow persisted beyond the river crossing. I stashed my snowshoes and continued up the route with microspikes instead. The increase in mountain visitorship due to covid is just fine with me. This would have been a steep slog on snowshoes had I been the first one up Gypsum Ridge. And after all, there's plenty of room out here for us all.
Soon, I crossed an old mining road that leads to an abandoned gypsum mine behind the ridge. Continuing up through the forest, I noticed the Blackshale Creek Suspension Bridge across the valley. I decided to go and check it out after my hike. But first, getting to the top of Gypsum Ridge was my goal.
I must say, the final approach to the summit exceeded my expectations. The scenery was dramatic and an almost 360 degree view of the Kananaskis Valley waits for those who make it to the top. Lower Kananaskis Lake sprawls to the south, while the serrated profile of the Opal Range greets you head-on. A short but narrow bit leads to an outstanding lookout. Judging by the lack of footprints, most people stop at the summit where the beaten path terminates.
The descent was quick and uneventful. Cheery hikers on their way up politely moved off the trail to keep their distance, and I often did likewise.
Back at Smith-Dorrien Creek, I strapped my snowshoes back on and went for a wander upstream. The deep powder was a strark contrast to the feeling of a packed trail underfoot. I continued along the riverbed until the riverbank rose on both sides to steep canyon walls. Here, I exited on the east bank and continued uphill back to the highway.
Changing back into micropspikes, I hiked up the short trail to view the Blackshale Creek Suspension Bridge. It is closed in the winter due to the deep snow that piles up and essentially renders the handrail (and therefore the safety) non-existent.
