Megan and I went for two days into the upland barrens of Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland. Following the boat ride in to the trailhead, the gully ascent was almost tropical in nature...house-sized boulders, moss-covered logs, ferns and hidden pockets of fog and cool air.
On the barrens, there is rolling, variable terrain with sparse clumps of stunted trees (never really taller than waist high) and countless small ponds. The vegetation changes to grasses, sedges, berry shrubs and sub-alpine wildflowers. We saw a helicopter rescue of some over-exerted hikers.
Having generally good weather (it only rained at night when we were in the tent) was a pleasure. On the third morning, we had the highlight of seeing a young moose wander very close to our tent at sunrise. At one point, her curiosity brought her to within 8 metres of us, before I moved and the moose spooked and took off.
This was a memorable trip that we wouldn't often have the opportunity to actually do.
