Due to the fact that this years Snowpig Classic camping trip was held at a new site along the Ghost River, we named it "Ghostpig Classic". This year, accessing our site included an additional touch of spice in the form of a couple of river fords - brrr! Being quick and efficient in the change-over back to boots was key in keeping our feet safe.
For two days and two nights, we enjoyed a lovely site among a stand of evergreens along the Ghost River. I took the unique opportunity to pitch my tent on a gravel bar island in the river. I even found a little 2X8 board of flood debris nearby that served as a footbridge to "Peter Island". The sound of water trickling along both sides of the little island was relaxing to drift off to sleep for the night.
We chopped lots of firewood, hiked upstream for lunch on day two, enjoyed each others company and ate like kings.
A tally before the trip showed me that I've done eighteen overnight, backcountry, winter camping trips in all (two in Newfoundland, one in Ontario and fifteen in Alberta). Clayton coined the name "Snowpig Classic" in 2013. While these trips are certainly fun and challenging, it has come to mind that the future may involve some evolution where new adventures replace old traditions. Mother Nature has so much to show us. But for now, the annual Snowpig Classic is still delivering big on memories!
