Peter Jakobs and Myself went on the annual Snowpig Classic camping trip from February 22 to 24 this year. We had a wonderful site in mixed patches of trees for a combination of views and shelter. Watridge Creek suppled us with fresh running water, and all of our needs were met.
Watridge Lake was nearby and provided a nice place for a scenic snowshoe. While walking around the lake, we discovered a snow shelter that had probably been made as a winter survival demonstration. A chest-tight squeeze through a small entry port opened up a rather roomy enclosure inside.
The weather was fantastic with warm sunny days punctuated by mild, starry nights. We snacked non-stop, and were even spoiled with my Mom's poppy seed loaf - it was delicious...thanks Mom!
On the second night, I saw the most amazing asteroid display I'd ever seen. Four orange lights in a group with very long, bright red tails were being followed by a cluster of three more the same travelling across the sky for no less than five seconds. For a brief second, I was so shocked that I wasn't even sure if everything was OK. I eagerly awaited more, but none came. Then, several seconds later, each one made a loud boom as if breaking a sound barrier. It sounded like seven distant gunshots, one right after another. The light and intensity of these lead me to think that they had broken or skimmed along the atmosphere?
Otherwise, most time was spent wandering around collecting firewood for our campfire. On the last morning, we dumped on all remaining kindling for one last burst of warmth before heading back to the trailhead.
