Today was soaking wet all day. I had no takers to join on this day, so just me it was.
I maybe should have picked a more level hike - over 600 meters gain to the lakes had me sweating under my gore-tex coat...but not quite as wet as I would be if I took it off. On the upside, the smell of the forest on days like today is something else. Damp earth, pine resin and wet cobblestones smell amazingly good when combined.
On my way to Galatea Lakes, I saw only one other hiker, on his way out from Lilian Lake backcountry campground.
At Upper Galatea Lake, I was quite hungry and decided to have lunch. There was no dry ground to sit on, so I crouched on my haunches under a thicket of fir tree. I cut my huge naval orange into six fat wedges and started peeling them out of the rind with my fingertips while shoving the rest in my face. Then I noticed how much like Smegel (when he's eating the raw fish on the riverbank) I must have looked like at that point, with juice dripping down my chin in the pouring rain...crouched there, protecting the precious! Ha ha!
Anyway, the swirly weather and low clouds made for cool scenery and I enjoyed the day nonetheless.
