This year, the ice carving competition had a theme of *Wonders of the World*.
The heavy snowfall I experienced on the dark-early highway drive from Calgary was giving the carvers trouble too - accumulating on their works in the final hours of assembly. By 8 a.m. we had arrived in Lake Louise, and the carvers had six hours left to finish. We went for a snowshoe to Island Lake and came back in time for the afternoon judging.
There were ten carvings in all, some of which were built wonders and some of which were natural wonders. The Egyptian Pyramid deconstruction won first prize. We both agreed that it was indeed the best carving there.
We returned after midnight to take photographs in the dark when the carvings really show their best (and no crowds are in the way).
