Hmmm - what to do when I get an unexpected Saturday off from work? Well, go for a hike, of course! Since I was going to help out at the restaurant and work Valentines Day, I had Saturday all free.
I headed out to the front ranges near Millarville, and hiked up Sinnot Hill. The air was a crisp -24 Celsius, the sun was shining and the wind was nil.
I started out by heading through North Fork Campground, then snowshoed downstream along Threepoint Creek. From there, I picked up 9999 trail and ascended it to a pass. From the pass, I headed east over an intervening hill and up to Sinnot Hill.
When I first broke out of the trees near the summit, I was stricken by the beauty of my surroundings. A winter wonderland lay before me. It was utterly silent - not a breath of wind, not a peep of sound. But after some photos and a quick snack break, I was forced to leave sooner than I wanted because of the cold. The sun was nice, and warmed my black clothing somewhat, but not enough to compensate for my low heart rate. It was time to get going again.
On the descent, I came across two hikers following my tracks up. They were the only other people I saw. Once back down to level ground, I veered westward through a large open meadow and randomly threaded my way back through the woods, in search of suitable future winter camping sites.
On the way home, I took a rural scenic route that I hadn't driven before. It proved to be more entertaining than the highway, although the road conditions demanded a bit more attention than would dry pavement.
