Mt. Haffner has a rugged approach and a feeling of solitude due to the trail-less terrain.
We started up an avalanche slope that had incurred a mudslide just the night before! Vicious hail (perforated and smattered leaves on the shrubs) and intense rain had funneled down the smooth slabs of Vermillion Peak into this gully. Although only a few metres wide, the mudslide was over a kilometer long.
Higher up, we bushwacked through a burn. This was my favorite scenery of the day.
Soon, we were on the final approach to the summit. We took a lengthy break here and enjoyed the scenery on this beautiful day.
The only bummer on this trip was a slip and fall I took when climbing over a jumble of logs just before getting back to the highway - thanks for the icepack, Clayton! - it really helped on the drive home.
