I hadn't been to the Buller Pass area for several years now, and I was looking forward to this hike quite a bit. It didn't disappoint.
The weather called for a mixed bag with a wetter afternoon. The goal was to summit Buller Creek Peak and then return home. At the summit, the view reached farther than expected - it was clearer and warmer than forecast. We decided to extend our day by a couple of hours by hiking to Buller Pass and then on to North Buller Pass before looping back to the trailhead.
The scenery between the passes is truly delicious and has a feeling of remoteness and tranquility - no trail just wide open meadow.
Rounding the corner, we got a bit of a surprise seeing the large, steep snowpatches spanning our route. I carefully step-kicked my way across before David, who followed in my footsteps. Next, it was Clayton's turn.
Beyond the pass, we descended west into a lovely rock-strewn valley. A fast-moving creek here has carved impressive little canyons in the limestone. Soon, we were back on familiar territory where the trail forks, and enjoyed the remaining few kilometers out.
