As I left Calgary in the early morning, the weather was quite poor with freezing rain and sleet plastered to my windows. Upon getting out to Kananaskis via Highway 546, the conditions had improved. The day was overcast and chilly (high of +3 Celcius), but the precipitation had stopped.
I first hiked the short Bluerock Creek trail, to the site of an old sawmill that used to operate here about 40 years ago.
Next, I moved down the highway a few kilometers and hiked up Mt. Hoffman. Hardy a mountain, the hike still proved adventurous with two river fords and a lovely section of routefinding through mature pine and spruce forest. The summit provided a nice view of surrounding peaks, with a fresh dusting of snow from the night before. The wind was calm and it was utterly silent at the top. I enjoyed a short lunch here before moving on to keep warm.
