The combination of 30+ km of hiking, 2000+ m of elevation gain and a 500 km round trip drive would keep most people from attempting Yoho Peak as a day trip from Calgary...but David and I were up for it.
We hiked in from the trailhead over The Whaleback to the impressive Twin Falls. From there, a surprisingly good trail (considering it is unmaintained) led us into Waterfall Valley.
Blocky ascent slopes got steeper as we climbed, but the views were breathtaking. Some easy to moderate scrambling got us atop the summit ridge. It was a pleasant hike to the top from there. A brief snow squall blew through threatening our summit lunch, but it ended just as quickly and we proceeded to relax and take in the views.
The descent was a riot - quick and direct down pebble-scree. We filled our water bags from a delicious stream and continued down.
A brief section took us through a pebble-strewn path that wound its way through green grassy mounds. It was like something out of a children's fairytale storybook.
Once back at Twin Falls, we had to re-ascend The Whaleback, since it was our shortest return route. We took a few breaks throughout the day, but kept them short...we had to keep moving on this long trip. All said and done, we hiked from 8:15 am to 8:00 pm. From Calgary, we were 5:30 am to 10:30 pm...whew!
