Clayton, David and I hiked into the Lake O'Hara region today - but not to the popular eastern areas. We instead headed to the less visited Duchesnay Basin and Cathedral Prospect trails.
The long hike (9 km each way) up the bus road was a bit of a bore, but good conversation helped speed our progress.
Once on the hiking trail, we were treated to several small lakes dotted throughout this area.
We summited Consummation Peak, and although the air was a bit smoky, the views were great. We stopped on a roomy ledge for lunch and enjoyed some lunch wraps and samosa's with the sweet chili sauce that David brought. Upon looking at the nutritional information though, it was clear that we were consuming WAY too much of this sugary delight. We pondered if one could subsist on sweet chili sauce alone - three small bottles a day would meet the caloric requirement - it could just be poured into a bowl for a spoonful here and there throughout the day. Or we could cut the sauce with water 50/50 and drink it from our hydration packs? Maybe we better stop eating this sauce before we wonder why we are getting fat while going for long hikes!
The next area we visited was Monica Lake. Hiking this basin was my favorite part of the day. The cirque provided much room for exploration and the scenery was first-rate.
Upon return, we visited the Morning Glory Lakes and laughed at more sauce jokes. At this point we had just about consumed the whole bottle.
Soon after, we came upon a small group of hikers - the only other people we saw all day. One of them was Daniel Catley, the awesome DJ that will be playing our wedding next year!
This was a long day (11 hours of hiking), with great scenery and lots of good laughs...what more could you ask for?
