I went on a jaunt up Horton Hill today. The weather was great, and the south-facing slope provided nice photos and some morning sun on my back. Although there is no trail, I find the undergrowth in this part of Kananaskis (Sibbald) to be fairly benign. I think the dry chinook winds keep this area from being as lush as others.
After topping out on Horton Hill (named for the Tim Horton's kids camp nearby), I signed the summit register, which was protected within an ammunition case.
Wanting to extend my day, I forged on to Horton Ridge summit at GR 413572.
The first bit was the toughest. A deep ravine intervened and seemed like it leaned (just kidding, I'm running out of rhymes). But the next bit did drop down into a short but nasty section of deadfall in a ravine. Soon thereafter, I was back on an ascending ridge. A kilometer or two later, I was on the forested summit of Horton Ridge.
I wolfed down an apple and a piece of pizza and headed back on the same route as I came.
Back at the trailhead, some rather large raven tracks, complete with tail swish, were testament to them perusing my vehicle to see if food was on offer. A short while later I found their source of interest - a dead deer.
