I went for a solo snowshoe today near the 1A highway in Banff National Park.
I started in the Moose Meadows area and traveled south to Pilot Pond. The snow had a thin crust with deep, granular crystals below, making for less than ideal conditions. In order to lighten the workload and travel farther, I opted to walk along the shoulder of the railbed for some time. A train approached and I set up for a photo, but was stuck in that safe spot for a few minutes as the cold wind of the passing cars lashed at me. This train was really cookin'...my guess was about 90 km/h.
I then wandered down by the Bow River, past the point where Redearth Creek joins the Bow Valley, and on to Pilot Pond for a lunch break.
