I had plans for the afternoon, so I decided to take the drive time out of the equation and visit a Provincial Park in my neighbourhood - Fish Creek (Shannon Terrace parking lot is only 12km from my house).
I hadn't spent much time exploring the western reaches of this urban park, so a visit was overdue. Chilly air and overcast weather kept most visitors away...I saw very few people.
The network of singletrack trails is quite extensive, so I was not limited to the paved trail or the main gravel trail running through the length of the park. I ended up fording the creek twice, since areas of interest didn't coincide with bridge locations. The lack of foliage allowed me to see five wasps nests and seven birds nests during my wander. The highlight was watching a mink along the creekbed in Votier's Flats. It walked out on the ice across the creek from me, stood up on its hind legs to sniff the air and took off. I waited, but it didn't re-appear.
